If you ever have the chance, I highly suggest that you try hunting squirrels over a dog. It’s a different experience compared to the still hunting or stalking approach. While my dogs aren’t what I would call “formally” trained like some you see (including the ones in the video above), they will locate a tree squirrels. I’ve killed a whole mess of squirrels over my dog Sassy as she lives to hit the woods and hunt.
One thing you need to successfully hunt over dogs is a decent amount of land or hunting area. When still hunting, I can work a small patch of timber that’s half an acre and walk out with 2-3 squirrels (assuming it’s holding squirrels). With dogs, they would work through that 1/2 acre in 15 minutes and be looking for somewhere else to hunt.
Check out the video if you want to get a feel for how it’s done. I personally prefer to stick with a 22 or 17HM2 for dogs as well, but some people prefer to use a shotgun as the squirrels might be moving to get away from the dogs. I’ve found that the dogs will cause squirrels to basically freeze up near the upper portion of a tree so you can get some opportunities for longer shots that are really out of shotgun range (at least, in the region I hunt).
